Contraception: which method to choose?
Using contraception is essential to avoid unwanted pregnancy. There are many choices on the market, which can quickly become a source of confusion for some.
To help you, here’s an outline of the main choices available.
Looking for long-term protection?
We recommend long-term contraception, as recommended by the SOGC1. Among these choices, the contraceptive implant (3-year duration) and the hormonal IUD (5-year duration) contain hormones, while the copper IUD (5- or 10-year duration) is non-hormonal. Injectable progestin contraception is another option, requiring 4 intramuscular injections per year administered by a health professional.
Planning to get pregnant in the near future?
Short-term hormonal contraception may be the best choice: in the form of an oral pill, patch or vaginal ring. Other methods also exist, such as male or female condoms, cervical caps, sponges, diaphragms, spermicides, calendars, abstinence, withdrawal, LAM, etc.
For the benefits and possible side effects of all contraceptive methods, we invite you to visit this website containing evidence-based information: https://www.sexandu.ca/fr/contraception/hormonal-contraception/#tc5.
